Low-Carbon Construction: Building a Sustainable Future

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

As a major contributor to global carbon emissions, the construction industry has a crucial role to play in the fight against climate change. Every effort to reduce emissions is a step towards a more sustainable future.

According to a UK government 2019 report, the construction industry was responsible for around 11% of the UK's total carbon output. This percentage can vary of course depending on the region being considered, but it is clear that the construction industry has an important role to play in reducing global emissions.

As the first step towards sustainability, a carbon audit is essential for measuring current emissions. By thoroughly analysing every aspect of a construction project, from the materials used to the energy consumed and the transportation involved, it is possible to measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and devise a plan to reduce them.

Five Steps to a Low-Carbon Construction Industry

  1. Use low-carbon materials: Choosing materials with a lower carbon footprint can help reduce emissions from the construction process. For example, using sustainably-sourced wood, straw bale, cellulose or recycled materials can reduce the carbon emissions associated with the production and transportation of building materials.

  2. Incorporate renewable energy: Incorporate renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal into the design and construction of the building.

  3. Utilise green technology: Utilise green technology such as green roofs, green walls, and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce energy consumption and decrease the building's carbon footprint.

  4. Promote sustainable transportation: Encouraging the use of public transportation, carpooling, cycling and electric vehicles can reduce emissions from transportation during and after the construction process.

  5. Offset emissions: Offsetting emissions through the purchase of reputable carbon credits or the implementation of carbon offset projects can help compensate for any remaining emissions.

As we work towards a more sustainable future, the benefits of reducing the construction industry's carbon emissions are numerous. From addressing the urgent crisis of climate change to improving air quality, public health, and energy costs, every effort to reduce emissions is a vital step towards a brighter, healthier future for all. By committing to reducing emissions and creating a more sustainable future, the construction industry could be a driving force for positive change and a model for other industries to follow.
